HIST 143: Latin America Since Independence

Enroll Summer

Divided into twenty nations and territories, Latin America features immense variation in geography, language, culture, and politics. Our exploration will provide a sense of and appreciation for this diversity. We will ponder a regional history with shared legacies and challenges such as colonialism and the forging of modern nation-states. The broad narrative of the course will follow the histories of Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil, which will enable us to place the events of other significant places, including Peru, Colombia, Paraguay, Central America, and the Caribbean, in context.
